It’s been a while since we’ve posted on our blog, but we couldn’t let the whole summer go by without discussing some of the coolness in summer cocktails for your next event! The summer is the perfect time to have a great outdoor party centered around a theme. Themed parties are always fun, but the key is to make sure that the cocktails accompany the theme. I, personally, had the joy of attending two themed parties this summer, a birthday party for myself and a 30th Birthday Party for my best friend. For my Last Twenty-Something Birthday, I decided to have a Tiki Party theme, which could do nothing but present fun times for all who attended! We had Polynesian-inspired bites, and cocktails such as the Mai Tai, which is THE classic Polynesian cocktail, Sex on the Beach cocktails, Hawaiian Beer, and Jello Island Shots! For my friend’s 30th Birthday, we decided to surprise her with a Miami-Chic themed party, complete with a Cigar Bar and a Mojito/Cuba Libre Bar that included Mojitos, Strawberry Mojitos, Blueberry Mojitos and Cuba Libres (Rum and Coke with Lime). In addition, we soaked a watermelon in Tito’s Vodka, inspired by the TV show, Drinking Made Easy, which made tasty little watermelon treats, and was eventually used to make Watermelon-Lime cocktails. We had a blast at both events, and the theme-influenced summer cocktails made it all the more fun! So, when you’re planning your next themed-party, be sure that the cocktails aren’t left out of the theme!

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo! A day celebrating the Mexican Army’s improbable victory over the French back in 1862. What better to indulge in, but one of Mexico’s classic cocktails, The Margarita?! Not only is the Margarita one of Mexico’s revered cocktails, but it’s also a staple in Texas! The beauty of the Margarita is that there are tons of types andcombinations that a Margarita can be enjoyed in, in addition the basics, tequila, Triple Sec, and lime juice. You have Traditional, Frozen, On the Rocks, Presidente, Strawberry, Raspberry, Prickly Pear, Kiwi, Pomegranate, Mango, Dos Equis, Blue Curacao, Peach, Italian, Salt, No Salt, just to name a few. Naming the different types almost makes me feel like Bubba explaining the different kinds of shrimp. At any rate… be sure to toast with a Margarita of your choice for Cinco de Mayo!
First off, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! Oh, the joy of drinking green drinks and drinks inspired by the Irish… which is why on today, I won’t be highlighting a specific drink, but I’d like to highlight some of the great drinks you can partake in on St. Patty’s Day! Let’s start with Green Beer! What’s St. Patty’s Day without green beer? Green food coloring is added to your favorite beer to give it that St. Patty’s Day flair. Even if green beer isn’t your thing, how about requesting one of your favorite Irish beers, like Guinness or Killian’s Irish Red. Another St. Patty’s Day staple is Jameson Irish Whiskey, the “Official Drink of St. Patrick’s Day”. I had the honor of attending a tasting for Jameson Whiskey a couple of weeks ago. (Check out the pics on our Facebook page.) Jameson Whiskey has quite a few different brands, and each has its own distinct flair. I really enjoyed the Jameson Gold Reserve, which was creamy with honey notes. But, for the purposes of St. Patty’s Day, enjoy a glass of Jameson on the rocks, or request a cocktail with the original Jameson Irish Whiskey! Plenty of bars have amended their menus just for St. Patty’s Day, to include green cocktails and cocktails with Jameson Irish Whiskey. Last, but not least for St. Patty’s Day, Baileys Irish Cream. Everyone loves the rich, creamy taste of Baileys! Enjoy it on the rocks, or in a shot. And if you’re feeling really Irish, how about an Irish Car Bomb? The Irish Car Bomb combines Guinness stout beer, Baileys Irish Cream and Jameson Irish Whiskey. The best of all 3 worlds!! Have a great time this St. Patty’s Day, and be sure to DRINK RESPONSIBLY!!! Sláinte!!!
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s Mardi Gras time!!! People are watching parades, catching beads and gulping down cocktails and beer simultaneously in New Orleans, other parts of Louisiana and Galveston, Texas. Two of the most popular cocktails inspired by New Orleans are the Hand Grenade and Hurricane, which are ideal for our Mardi Gras-inspired Cocktails of the Week. The Hand Grenade consists of… well, actually I don’t know what it consists of because it’s a “SECRET” recipe. It is said that only a bar named Tropical Isle in New Orleans, at the end of Bourbon Street, has “The” Hand Grenade. They’re not sharing the secret, and have declared that any other recipes found online are fake. I can tell you that the Hand Grenade is fruity, has a melon taste and is supposedly very potent. It’s served on the rocks in a really cool, neon green, grenade yard cup. So, if you’re in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, be sure to try “The” Hand Grenade. For those of us who are not in New Orleans, you can celebrate your Mardi Gras with a Hurricane! The Hurricane cocktail can be served frozen or on the rocks, and consists of Light Rum, Dark Rum, Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice and Grenadine- sometimes 151 Proof Rum is added (Eeeek!). The Hurricane is fruity and tropical, and the Dark Rum gives it a Jamaican “Island” taste. The Hurricane is a classic cocktail, and can be ordered at bars everywhere. Top your Mardi Gras off with a Hand Grenade or a Hurricane! Literally!
Last week, we attended a Birthday gathering for my husband’s good friend, Jerry, at Mo’s “A Place for Steaks”. The cocktail menu was quite extensive, with many interesting concoctions, but I was drawn to one in particular, the Pomegranate Martini. Mo’s Pomegranate Martini combines Vodka, Pama Pomegranate Liqueur and Grand Marnier. Quite a treat for one cocktail! This martini has a little bite for those who prefer drinks that are not too fruity, but the tartness of Pama Pomegranate Liqueur fuses with the sweetness of Grand Marnier for a good combination. Drinking Mo’s Pomegranate Martini puts you in a place that makes you feel swanky, just like the restaurant!
